Wright Brothers Biography

Biography: Wright Brothers

Wilbur Wright; Born 1867, Died 1912
Orville Wright: Born 1871, Died 1948

Wilbur Wright was born near New Castle, Indiana on April 16, 1867. Orville Wright was born in Dayton, Ohio on August 19, 1871. Their father was a bishop of the Church of the United Brethren in Christ. As boys Wilbur and Orville Wright were given a toy helicopter by their father, beginning their interest in the possibility of flight.

When Orville built a printing press and established a weekly newspaper, Wilbur joined in the endeavor. The Wright brothers became inseparable and neither ever married.

In 1892 Wilbur Wright and Orville Wright opened their bicycle business. The brothers, who had both mechanical and engineering abilities, designed, manufactured and repaired bicycles.

Inspired by the work of Otto Lilienthal and other glider pioneers, Wilbur Wright and Orville Wright were convinced that a motor-driven, heavier-than-air craft could be developed. They began their experiments using kites. In 1900 they built their first glider, a biplane, which they successfully launched near Kitty Hawk, North Carolina. The subsequent flight of a larger biplane did not go well. The Wright brothers constructed a wind tunnel at their bicycle shop to measure lift coefficients. Through numerous designs and tests, the Wright brothers developed a wing that would give them an effective lift. During the winter of 1902-1903, they built a larger plane, as well as a gasoline motor and propeller for the plane.

On December 17, 1903, with Orville Wright at the controls, the Air Age was launched with a twelve second, 120 feet flight.

The Wright brothers built and tested new planes and engines during 1904 and 1905. Wilbur Wright and Orville Wright were granted patents on their planes in 1906.

Wilbur Wright died on May 30, 1912 of typhoid fever. Orville Wright died on January 30, 1948 of a heart attack.
