Biography: Lives of Pierre and Marie Curie
Pierre: Born 1859, Died 1906; Marie: Born 1867, Died 1934
Pierre Curie was born on May 15, 1859 in Paris, France. Pierre Curie was in charge of laboratory work at the School of Physics and Chemistry in Paris. Here he did important studies of crystals and discovered the piezoelectric effect in 1880.
Marie (Sklodovski) Curie was born on November 7, 1867 in Warsaw, Poland. She attended the school of science at the Sorbonne in Paris.
The couple met in 1894 and was married on July 26, 1895.
The radioactivity of uranium had just been discovered by Henri Becquerel. Physicists were interested in this discovery and pursued their own research. Marie Curie was convinced of the existence of an unidentified radioactive element. Pierre Curie joined her in her research. In 1898 they announced the discovery of polonium and radium. Following these discoveries, Pierre Curie studied the properties of radium and Marie Curie worked on isolation of the elements.
In 1903 Pierre Curie and Marie Curie shared the Nobel Prize for physics with Henri Becquerel.
Pierre Curie became a professor at the Sorbonne. He was killed by a wagon in 1906.
Marie Curie spent the rest of her life studying radium and radioactivity. In 1911 she won the Nobel Prize for chemistry. Marie Curie died on July 4, 1934.
