Biography: Michael Faraday
Born 1791, Died 1867
Michael Faraday was born on September 22, 1791 in Newington, Surrey, England. While working as an apprentice to a bookbinder, Faraday furthered his interest in science by reading all the available scientific books.
Michael Faraday later attended lectures by Sir Humphrey Davy. He then submitted his notes to Davy and sought a job from him. Davy was so impressed by Faraday that he offered him a position as an assistant in this laboratory.
While working for Davy, Faraday began doing his own experiments. Michael Faraday made notable contributions in both chemistry and electricity. An entire branch of organic chemistry began with his discovery in 1825 of the hydrocarbon benzene.
Faraday’s discovery of electromagnetic induction in 1831 was his most notable achievement. His work in the field became the basis for future development of the electric generator, which powers electric power plants.
Michael Faraday died on August 25, 1867.
