Louis Pasteur Biography

Biography: Louis Pasteur

Born 1822, Died 1895

The noted French chemist, Louis Pasteur was born on December 27, 1822 at Dole, France.

Pasteur studied at the College Royal de Besancon and the Ecole Normale Superieure, a teacher-training college. While in school he studied the difference in the crystal formation of tartaric acid and racemic acid. In 1847 Louis Pasteur obtained his doctor of science degree and became a professor of chemistry at the University of Strasbourg.

Louis Pasteur became a professor and dean at the School of Science at Lisle in 1854. It was here that Pasteur did his work in the fermentation process. His research found that fermentation, putrefaction, infection and souring were caused by microbes or germs. Pasteur went on to study the formation and function of lactic acid in the souring of milk. Additional research resulted in the development of the pasteurization process used in the dairy and food processing industries.

Pasteur worked to convince other scientists that germs do not originate spontaneously, but enter matter from the outside.

Louis Pasteur was able to aid the French silk industry in 1865 when a disease attacked silkworms. His research discovered the cause to be bacteria on the mulberry leaves and transmission of bacteria in the eggs of the worms. He taught the breeders how to prevent the disease on the mulberry leaves and how to identify healthy eggs.

Pasteur’s discovery of the immunization technique was the result of his fight against anthrax and chicken cholera. His research proved that by injecting weakened cultures of the microbes causing the diseases into healthy animals they became immune to the disease.

Louis Pasteur began research to combat rabies using his immunization process to prevent the disease from developing in people after they had been bitten by a rabid animal. In 1885 he successfully vaccinated a human against the rabies.

In recognition of his great genius the Pasteur Institute was established to carry on the fight against disease. Louis Pasteur died on September 28, 1895.
