Biography: Life of Guglielmo Marconi
Born 1874, Died 1937; Inventor of Radio.
Guglielmo Marconi was born on April 25, 1874 near Bologna, Italy. Interested in science, Marconi was privately tutored. He received his scientific education from professors at the University of Bologna.
Prompted by the work of Heinrich Hertz, in 1894 Guglielmo Marconi conceived the idea that Hertzian waves could possibly be used in communication. Marconi developed an apparatus for sending and receiving telegraph messages through the air. The invention was offered to the Italian government, which rejected his offer.
In 1896 Marconi went to England and obtained the first patent for a system of wireless telegraphy. Marconi’s Wireless Telegraphy Company, Ltd. was formed to commercialize the invention. The importance of wireless communication for saving lives at sea was demonstrated in 1899 when the East Goodwin Sands lightship was rammed in a fog.
In 1901 a transmission sent across the Atlantic Ocean proved that the long waves used by Marconi in his transmissions followed the curvature of the earth.
With the inventions of other scientists, the wireless telegraphy developed by Guglielmo Marconi became wireless telephony, voice radio as we know it today. In 1909 Guglielmo Marconi, jointly with Germany physicist Karl Ferdinand Braun, was awarded the Noble Prize in physics.
Guglielmo Marconi went on to do experiments with short waves and microwaves. Marconi was in charge of scientific research under Benito Mussolini until his death on July 20, 1937.
