circa 1340 -- Geoffrey Chaucer born in London England (various dates given, including 1338, 1342 and 1343.
1359 -- Chaucer taken prisoner during battle in France, King Edward III pays ransom for Chaucer's release.
1370 -- Chaucer sent to the continent on a diplomatic mission.
1386 -- Chaucer gains, then looses seat as Member of Parliament, knight of the shire for Kent.
1400 -- Geoffrey Chaucer dies and is buried in Westminster Abbey, the first to be laid in the Poets' Corner.
