Biography: Life of F. Scott Fitzgerald
Born 1896, Died 1940
Francis Scott Key Fitzgerald was born on September 24, 1896 in St. Paul, Minnesota. F. Scott Fitzgerald was a descendant of Francis Scott Key, the author of “The Star Spangled Banner”. Fitzgerald began writing at an early age. He attended St. Paul Academy, the Newman School in New Jersey and Princeton University. Fitzgerald neglected his studies at Princeton and did not graduate.
In 1917 F. Scott Fitzgerald enlisted in the army. While stationed to Camp Sheridan near Montgomery, Alabama he met and became engaged to Zelda Sayre in 1918. Fitzgerald began writing a novel while in the army.
After his discharge from the army in 1919, Fitzgerald went to New York where he worked for an advertising agency for several months. Later in 1919 he returned to St. Paul to rewrite his novel. F. Scott Fitzgerald began his career as a writer of short stories in 1919. As a means of making money, he continued to write short stories for the rest of his life.
The publication of This Side of Paradise in March 1920 made F. Scott Fitzgerald rich and famous. In April of 1920 he and Zelda were married. In October 1921 their only child, a daughter, was born. The couple lived an extravagant lifestyle and both drank heavily. While living in New York in 1922, Fitzgerald wrote his second novel The Beautiful and Damned.
In order to maintain their lifestyle F. Scott Fitzgerald wrote a play and short stories. Although he only wrote when he was sober, Fitzgerald’s drinking gave him a reputation as an irresponsible writer.
In 1924 the Fitzgeralds move to France. It was here that F. Scott Fitzgerald wrote The Great Gatsby. This highly acclaimed novel was published in April 1925. In Paris Fitzgerald met and formed a friendship with Ernest Hemingway. While in Paris Scott and Zelda’s marriage was damaged when Zelda became involved with a French aviator. Fitzgerald began working on his fourth novel, but made little progress. In 1930 Zelda suffered her first breakdown.
In 1931 the Fitzgeralds returned to the United States and eventually settled in Baltimore. Zelda suffered a relapse in 1932 and spent the rest of her life in and out of sanitariums. F. Scott Fitzgerald completed his novel Tender Is the Night, which was published in 1934.
In 1937 F. Scott Fitzgerald went to Hollywood to become a screenwriter for Metro-Goldwyne-Mayer. His option was dropped in 1938. F. Scott Fitzgerald died on December 21, 1940 of a heart attack. While in Hollywood, Fitzgerald had begun a novel, The Last Tycoon. The unfinished novel was published n 1941.
