|
Victory in Japan or VJ-Day August 15, 1945
Victory over Japan or VJ-Day occurred on August 15, 1945 (August 14, 1945 in the United States).
Following the devastating atomic bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, the Japanese were forced to concede defeat. On August 15, 1945 Emperor Hirohito announced by radio to the Japanese people the acceptance of the Potsdam Declaration which called for unconditional surrender. With the war in Europe already over, VJ-Day marked the end of World War II. The formal signing of the surrender by Japan took place on September 2, 1945 on board the U.S.S. Missouri.
