World War Two -- Victory in Europe
|
Victory in Europe or VE-Day May 8, 1945.
By April 1945 United States and Allied forces had battled their way into Germany from the west and Soviet troops were advancing from the east. The American and Russian forces met at the Elbe River on April 25.
Realizing that defeat was at hand, on April 30, 1945 Adolf Hitler and his wife Eva Braun committed suicide in the Chancellery bunker in Berlin. Following Hitler’s suicide, General Alfred Jodl was sent to Rheims by Hitler’s successor, Admiral Karl Doenitz, to negotiate terms to end the war. On May 7 General Jodl signed for the unconditional surrender of all German troops effective May 8, 1945. V-E Day brought to an end Nazi aggression and the war in Europe.
