Omar Bradley Biography


Biography: Life of General Omar Bradley

Born 1893, Died 1981


Omar Nelson Bradley was born on February 12, 1893 in Clark, Missouri. Bradley graduated from the United States Military Academy in 1915. He served with the 14th Infantry Regiment in World War I.

In 1943 Omar Bradley was named to head the 2nd Corps in North Africa, under the command of General George S. Patton. Bradley’s troops captured Bizerte, contributing to the fall of Tunisia. Omar Bradley then led his troops in the successful invasion and fall of Sicily.

Omar Bradley was given command of the 1st U.S. Army in 1944 and took part in the planning for the invasion of France. Bradley led his forces during the bloody landing on the beaches at Normandy on D-Day in June 1944.

Bradley was then given command of the U.S. 12th Army Group, consisting of the 1st, 3rd, 9th and 15th Armies. The 12th Army Group, the largest army group ever assembled, continued operations through Europe defeating Germany counteroffensives until V-E Day on May 8, 1945.

Following World War II Omar Bradley served as Administrator of Veterans’ Affairs. In 1948 Omar Bradley became Chief of Staff of the Army. The following year Bradley was appointed the first chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. In 1950 he was awarded the rank of 5-star general. His memoirs A Soldier’s Story were published in 1951.

Omar Bradley retired from the military in 1953. Bradley died on April 8, 1981 in New York City.
