World War Two -- Guadalcanal

Battle of Guadalcanal

Guadalcanal, one of the Solomon Islands group, was occupied by the Japanese in 1941 with the intention of establishing an airfield on the island. The European Coastwatchers who remained on Guadalcanal after the attack on Pearl Harbor advised the Allies of the Japanese plans. The Coastwatchers provided critical intelligence during the protracted battle for Guadalcanal.

On August 7, 1942, the United States launched its first offensive of World War II with the landing of the 1st Marine Division on the island of Guadalcanal. The Marines seized the Japanese airfield and completed its construction. The airfield was later called Henderson Field.

The bloody naval, air and land campaigns for control of Guadalcanal lasted six months. In a series of naval engagements, with heavy losses on both sides, the United States Navy protected the Solomon Islands from invasion by the Japanese. The inability of the Japanese to provide its troops with food contributed to its defeat. By early February of 1943 the island of Guadalcanal was securely in United States hands.
