Biography: Life of Admiral Chester Nimitz
Born 1885, Died 1966
Chester William Nimitz was born on February 24, 1885 in Fredericksburg, Texas. Young Nimitz attempted to get an appointment to West Point, but none were available. He therefore applied to the Naval Academy at Annapolis, was accepted, and graduated in 1905.
In the years following his graduation, Chester W. Nimitz became a submarine and diesel engine expert. During World War I he served as chief of staff to Admiral Samuel S. Robison, the commander of the Atlantic Fleet’s submarine force.
In 1921 Nimitz became a student at the Naval War College for naval command training. Following this training he again became chief of staff to Admiral Robison, who was now commander-in-chief of the United States Fleet.
In 1926 Nimitz was appointed to develop the Naval ROTC program at the University of California. He later commanded a submarine division, the destroyer base in San Diego and the heavy cruiser USS Augusta, the flagship of the Asiatic Fleet.
In 1939 Chester W. Nimitz was promoted to rear admiral and eventually appointed as chief of the Bureau of Navigation.
Following the attack on Pearl Harbor, Admiral Husband E. Kimmel was relieved of duty as commander-in-chief of the Pacific Fleet. Chester W. Nimitz was appointed to fill the command, a position he held throughout the war.
As commander-in-chief Nimitz set about rebuilding the fleet for a direct attack on Japan. In the meantime, he effectively used the submarines and aircraft carriers that had been spared at Pearl Harbor in the fight in the Pacific. A series of bloody and difficult campaigns brought eventual victory. In December 1944 Chester W. Nimitz was advanced to the rank of Fleet Admiral.
On September 2, 1945 aboard the battleship USS Missouri Chester W. Nimitz signed the peace treaty with Japan on behalf of the United States.
On December 15, 1945 Chester W. Nimitz was made commander-in-chief of the United States Fleet for a period of two years.
Chester W. Nimitz died on February 20, 1966 in San Francisco, California.
