Biography: Life of Admiral "Bull" Halsey, Jr.

William F. “Bull” Halsey, Jr. was born on October 30, 1882 in Elizabeth, New Jersey. Halsey graduated from the United States Naval Academy in 1904.
Much of his early career was spent on destroyers. During World War I, William F. Halsey served as the commander of destroyers that escorted convoys across the Atlantic.
In 1935 at the age of fifty-two, William F. Halsey earned his wings as a naval aviator. He was subsequently assigned to command carrier divisions.
William F. Halsey was promoted to vice-admiral in 1940 and became commander of the Aircraft Battle Force. Assigned command of the USS Enterprise, Halsey was at sea when Pearl Harbor was attacked on December 7, 1941. In early 1942 Halsey directed the first strikes against the Japanese in the Marshall and Gilbert Islands. His forces aided in the “Doolittle Raid” on Tokyo on April 18, 1942.
On October 18, 1942 William F. Halsey was appointed commander of the South Pacific Force and South Pacific Area. His forces captured Guadalcanal and other important islands in the Solomons.
In June 1944 as commander of the Third Fleet, Halsey launched successful campaigns in the Philippines, Formosa, Okinawa and other Pacific islands. Halsey was true to his slogan “Hit hard, hit fast, hit often”.
The formal surrender by Japan on September 2, 1945 took place aboard his flagship the USS Missouri.
On December 11, 1945 William F. Halsey was promoted to Fleet Admiral. Halsey retired from the Navy in 1947.
William F. Halsey died on August 16, 1959 at Fishers Island Country Club, Connecticut. He is buried at Arlington National Cemetery.
