Women in World War Two


  • Marine Corps Women’s Reserve -- The Marine Corps Women’s Reserve received training in all aspects of Marine combat during the Second World War.

  • SPARS – Women’s Reserve of the United States Coast Guard -- SPARS worked as air traffic controllers, boatswain’s mates, coxswains, radio operaters and technicians, machinist mates or medical assistants.

  • WACs – Women’s Army Corps -- WACs served as cartographers, photographers, medical technicians and aircraft mechanics.

  • WASPs – Women Airforce Service Pilots -- WASPs performed ferrying duties, broke in new aircraft, provided flight instruction, and towed gunnery targets during World War 2.

  • WAVES – Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service -- WAVES served in clerical or administrative positions, were assigned as instructors for pilots and calculated bomb trajectories.
