WAVES – Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service
The WAVES (Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service) was established in 1942 as part of the United States Naval Reserve. Mildred McAfee was the first commander of the WAVES. The unit was trained for shore duty to release men for combat duty. Unlike the WAC, which was an auxiliary unit, the WAVES were given the same status as the men.
While many WAVES served in clerical or administrative positions, they were used in all non-combat areas. Some WAVES were assigned as instructors for pilots or to calculate bomb trajectories.
Following the War, in 1948 the WAVES became a permanent part of the Navy until the military was integrated in 1978.
