Marine Corps Women’s Reserve
The Marine Corps Women’s Reserve was established in 1943. Ruth Cheney Streeter was appointed the first director. Unlike the other branches of service, the women of the Marines were not given a nickname. They were known as WRs. As in the other branches of service, the Women’s Reserve was organized to replace men headed for combat duty.
The WRs underwent tougher training than other women in the military. The Marine Corps Women’s Reserve received training in all aspects of marine combat. The women served in numerous military non-combat specialties.
In 1948 WRs became WM or Women Marines when President Truman integrated the services.
