Biography: Life of Hillary Rodham Clinton

Born 1947


Hillary Rodham Clinton was born on October 26, 1947 into a conservative middle-class family in Chicago, Illinois. She received her B.A. from Wellesley College in 1969. At Wellesley she was active in student politics and became a Democrat. In 1973 Hillary Rodham received her J.D. from Yale Law School. While at Yale she met Bill Clinton.

Hillary Rodham went to Washington in 1974 where she worked as counsel on the inquiry staff of the House Judiciary Committee on the impeachment of President Richard M. Nixon.

In 1975 Hillary Rodham married William Jefferson Clinton. They have one daughter, Chelsea.

While Bill Clinton pursued his political career in Arkansas, Hillary Rodham Clinton joined the Rose Law Firm in Little Rock. She was the First Lady of Arkansas from 1983 to 1993.

When Bill Clinton assumed the presidency in 1993 Hillary Rodham Clinton was appointed to lead a task force on health care reform. The proposed plan was controversial and was abandoned in 1994. Hillary Rodham Clinton then put her talents to work for the CHIP, children’s health insurance program, and for breast cancer research funding. Hillary Rodham Clinton was First Lady of the United States from 1993 to 2001.

In 2000 Hillary Rodham Clinton announced that she would run for the United States Senate seat being vacated by New York Senator Daniel Patrick Moynihan. Although she had never run for public office before, she won the seat by a wide margin. Hillary Rodham Clinton became the only First Lady elected to the United States Senate.

As a Senator, Hillary Rodham Clinton became a strong advocate for the interests of the people throughout New York State. Following the 9/11 attack, she was influential in securing funding for the clean-up and recovery of New York City. Homeland, economic and national security issues are among her top priorities as a United States Senator.
