Biography: Life of Zachary Taylor
Born 1784, Died 1850; Served as 12th President of the United States 1849-1850
Zachary Taylor was born in Orange County, Virginia on November 24, 1784. Taylor’s family moved to northern Kentucky and he received his only formal education from a private tutor.
In 1810 Zachary Taylor married Margaret Smith. They had four children.
Zachary Taylor began his military career in 1808 and over 40 years fought in the War of 1812, the Indian Wars in the Northwest Territory and Florida. Taylor was promoted to brigadier general following his defeat of the Seminole Indians in 1837. The Mexican War brought national fame to “Old Rough and Ready” Zachary Taylor with his defeat of Santa Anna in 1847.
As a national hero, Zachary Taylor was elected president in 1848 and assumed office in 1849. During his term in office a treaty with Great Britain was negotiated which led to the construction of the Panama Canal years later. The dispute between slave and free states became a major problem and a series of compromise resolutions were proposed and debated.
Zachary Taylor’s term in office was cut short by his death on July 9, 1850 from cholera. Taylor was buried near Louisville, Kentucky.
