Woodrow Wilson Biography

Biography: Life of Woodrow Wilson

Born 1856, Died 1924; Served as 27th President of the United States 1913-1921.

Woodrow Wilson was born on December 28, 1856 in Staunton, Virginia. He graduated from the College of New Jersey (Princeton University) and obtained a law degree from the University of Virginia. He also attended Johns Hopkins University.

In 1885 Woodrow Wilson married Ellen Axson. They had three daughters. Mrs. Wilson died in 1914 and in 1915 he married a widow, Edith Bolling Galt.

An educator, Wilson was a college professor and was president of Princeton University. In 1910 Woodrow Wilson was elected governor of New Jersey. As governor he was responsible for a number of acts for the benefit of the public good.

Woodrow Wilson became president in 1913. He pressured the Congress to enact an unprecedented amount of progressive legislation. Wilson began his second term as president in 1917. Having kept the United States out of World War I for three years, based on continued German submarine warfare, in April 1917 President Wilson asked Congress to declare war. World War I ended on November 11, 1918. President Wilson participated in the peace conference and wrote into the peace treaty the constitution of a League of Nations. His ideas were rejected by the United States Senate and the United States did not join the League of Nations.

In 1919 Woodrow Wilson had a stroke. He refused, however, to give up the presidential office and retired in 1921. Woodrow Wilson died on February 3, 1924 and is buried in Washington, D.C.
