Biography: Life of William Howard Taft

Born 1857, Died 1930; Served as President of the United States 1909-1913.


William Howard Taft was born in Cincinnati, Ohio on September 15, 1857. Taft graduated from Yale University and received a law degree from Cincinnati Law School.

Taft married Helen (Nellie) Herron in 1886. They had three children.

From 1881 through 1899 William Howard Taft held a number of appointed positions, including Ohio Supreme Court judge, United States solicitor general and Federal circuit court judge.

Taft was appointed governor of the Philippines in 1901 and in 1903 became Theodore Roosevelt’s secretary of war.

William Howard Taft became president in 1909. During his administration there were disputes over tariffs and conservation issues and the 16th Amendment to the Constitution, authorizing a graduated income tax, was adopted.

Taft was defeated in his bid for a second term and left the presidency in 1913. In 1921 William Howard Taft was named Chief Justice of the United States Supreme Court. He died on March 8, 1930 and is buried in Arlington National Cemetery.
