Ulysses S. Grant Biography

Biography: Life of Ulysses S. Grant

Born 1822, Died 1885; Served as President of the United States 1869-1877.

Ulysses S. Grant was born on April 27, 1822 at Point Pleasant, Ohio. He had little formal education as a youth. At age 17 he entered the United States Military Academy at West Point.

Grant served in the Mexican War and in 1848 married Julia Dent. They had four children.

After spending several years in the army, Grant resigned and returned home. He worked at various jobs, including farming, selling real estate and as a clerk.

When the Civil War began Ulysses S. Grant resumed his military career by drilling volunteers. His ability was soon recognized and he advanced until in 1864 he was made general in command of the Federal armies. Robert E. Lee surrendered to General Grant on April 9, 1865.

Ulysses S. Grant was nominated and elected to the presidency, assuming office in 1869. In 1870 the 15th Amendment to the Constitution which gave Negroes the right to vote was enacted.

He was re-elected and began his second term in 1873. During the administrations of Grant there were both political and business corruption, including an attempt to corner the gold market, the Credit Mobilier bribing of government officials, and the defrauding of the treasury by distillers and revenue officers in the Whiskey Ring scandal. Grant himself was not implicated in these scandals, but did not act against those involved.

In 1877 Grant retired, eventually making his home in New York City. Ulysses S. Grant died on July 23, 1885.
