Biography: Life of Thomas Jefferson
Born 1743, Died 1826; Served as 3rd President of the United States 1801-1809.
Thomas Jefferson was born on April 13, 1743 at Shadwell in western Virginia. Jefferson attended William and Mary College where he studied mathematics, literature and philosophy, later studying law.
On January 1, 1772 Thomas Jefferson married Martha Wayler Skelton, who bore him six children. Following his wife's death, Jefferson also fathered a number of children with his African American slave, Sally Hemmings.
Thomas Jefferson was a delegate to the Continental Congress and in 1776 authored the Declaration of Independence. From 1779 to 1781 he was governor of Virginia. In 1782 Jefferson re-entered Congress and subsequently became the first secretary of state in George Washington’s Cabinet.
In 1796 Thomas Jefferson was elected vice president when John Adams was elected president.
Running as a Democratic-Republican, Thomas Jefferson defeated John Adams in the 1800 election and became the third president in 1801. During his presidency, the Louisiana Purchase was negotiated and the Lewis and Clark Expedition launched. Jefferson’s Embargo Act was an attempt to prevent a second war with England by applying economic pressure against Britain and France.
Thomas Jefferson served as president until 1809, when James Madison was elected the fourth president. Jefferson retired from public life to his home at Monticello.
Thomas Jefferson died on July 4, 1826, exactly 50 years after the adoption of the Declaration of Independence.
