Biography: Life of Rutherford B. Hayes
Born 1822, Died 1893; Served as President of the United States 1877-1881.
Rutherford B. Hayes was born on October 4, 1822 in Delaware, Ohio. He attended Kenyon College in Ohio and later obtained his law degree from Harvard Law School.
In 1852 Rutherford B. Hayes married Lucy Ware Webb. They had eight children, three dying in childhood.
Rutherford B. Hayes served in the Civil War, was elected to the United States House of Representatives and governor of Ohio.
Hayes was nominated as the Republican candidate in 1876. In the bitterly disputed election, Rutherford B. Hayes was declared the winner by an electoral commission and became president in 1877.
Rutherford B. Hayes ended the Reconstruction era by withdrawing the remaining Federal troops from the Southern states. Hayes worked to return the country to the gold standard, resulting in new prosperity for the country.
Rutherford B. Hayes chose not to run for a second term. In 1881 he retired to his home at Freemont, Ohio. Rutherford B. Hayes died on January 17, 1893.
