Ronald Reagan was born on February 6, 1911 in Tampico, Illinois. He attended Eureka College in Eureka, Illinois.
Reagan worked as a radio announcer before beginning his acting career in 1937. Reagan appeared in films until 1964. He also served as president of the Screen Actors Guild.
In 1940 Ronald Reagan married actress Jane Wyman. They had two children. This marriage ended in divorce in 1948. Reagan married actress Nancy Davis in 1952. They had two children.
From 1966 to 1974 Ronald Reagan was two-term governor of California.
Ronald Reagan was elected to the presidency in 1980 and assumed office in 1981. Shortly after assuming office, Reagan was wounded in an assassination attempt by John Hinckley, Jr. A popular president, he was re-elected to a second term.
A conservative, Ronald Reagan reshaped the Republican Party. He enacted tax cuts and a reduction in government programs. At the same time he increased defense spending, tripling the national debt. A staunch anti-communist, Ronald Reagan fought for and had a great influence in the eventual fall of the Soviet Union. In 1987 during his second term, a treaty with the Soviet Union was signed to eliminate intermediate-range nuclear weapons.
The presidency of Ronald Reagan was scarred by the Iran-Contra affair, which authorized secret arms sales for the release of American hostages. Despite investigations, Reagan left office with a high popularity rating.
In 1989 Reagan retired to California. Ronald Reagan died on January 5, 2004 and is buried in Simi Valley, California.
