Millard Fillmore Biography

Biography: Life of Millard Fillmore

Born 1800, Died 1874; Served as 12th President of the United States 1850-1853

Millard Fillmore was born on January 7, 1800 in Cayuga County, New York. Fillmore had little formal education. He taught school, studied law and became a lawyer.

In 1826 Millard Fillmore married Abigail Powers. They had two children. Mrs. Fillmore died in 1853 and in 1858 he married Caroline Carmichael McIntosh.

Having begun his political career in the New York legislature, Millard Fillmore was elected to the United States Congress in 1832 where he served for many years.

Millard Fillmore was elected Zachary Taylor’s vice president and assumed the presidency upon the death of Taylor in 1850. The United States was close to civil war over the problem of slavery. Millard Fillmore worked hard and gave his support to a set of laws, called the Compromise of 1850, which preserved the Union and postponed war. This support ended the political career of Millard Fillmore.

Fillmore retired to Buffalo, New York where he died on March 8, 1874.
