Martin Van Buren Biography


Biography: Life of Martin Van Buren

Born 1782, Died 1862; Served as President of the United States 1837-1841.


Martin Van Buren was born December 5, 1782 at Kinderhook, New York. Van Buren attended Kinderhook Academy and later studied law.

In 1807 Martin Van Buren married Hannah Hoes. They had four sons.

Though a successful lawyer, politics was the main interest of Martin Van Buren. In 1821 he was elected as a United States senator and later became the governor of New York. A strong supporter of Andrew Jackson, Van Buren served for a time as secretary of state in Jackson’s Cabinet. When Jackson was re-elected, Martin Van Buren became vice president.

Martin Van Buren assumed office as president in 1837. During the administration of Van Buren, the country was struck by a financial panic and regional conflicts. The financial crisis of 1837 resulted in the defeat of Van Buren in 1840.

Martin Van Buren died on July 24, 1862 at his estate near Kinderhook, New York.
