Lyndon Baines Johnson was born on August 27, 1908 near Stonewall, Texas. Johnson graduated from Southwest Texas State Teachers College.
In 1934 Lyndon B. Johnson married Claudia (Lady Bird) Taylor. They had two daughters.
Johnson was elected to the United States House of Representatives in 1937. He served as a lieutenant commander in the Navy during World War II. After the war, he served five more terms in the House.
Lyndon Johnson was elected to the United States Senate in 1948 and in 1954. He became a powerful and effective senator.
In 1960 Johnson was elected as John F. Kennedy’s vice president. Lyndon B. Johnson was sworn in as president on November 22, 1963 when President Kennedy was assassinated. Johnson was able to have legislation enacted based on the efforts of Kennedy, including aid to education and the Civil Rights Act of 1964.
Johnson won the 1964 election in a landslide and in 1965 was inaugurated to a full term as president. He continued his Great Society programs. The Voting Rights Act and the Medicare amendment to the Social Security Act became law.
Lyndon Baines Johnson was committed to United States support of the war in Vietnam. When negotiations failed, he expanded the use of United States troops in the war. Amid growing dissent and opposition to the war, Johnson announced that he would not run for a second term as president.
In 1969 Lyndon B. Johnson retired to his ranch in Texas. He died on January 22, 1973 and is buried in the family cemetery in Stonewall, Texas.
