John Tyler Biography


Biography: Life of John Tyler

Born 1790, Died 1862; Served as 10th President of the United States 1841-1845


John Tyler was born March 29, 1790 on the James River southeast of Richmond, Virginia. Tyler attended the grammar school at William and Mary College and then the College itself. He later studied law.

In 1813 John Tyler married Letitia Christian. They had nine children.

John Tyler began his political career in the Virginia House of Delegates in 1811. In 1816 John Tyler was elected a representative to the United States Congress, illness forcing him to resign two years later. Tyler resumed his political career in 1823, winning elections as state representative, governor and United States senator.

John Tyler was elected as William Henry Harrison’s vice president and assumed the office of president upon the death of Harrison in 1841. Though Tyler was an unpopular president, during his term in office the Navy was reorganized and a trade treaty with China was negotiated.

John Tyler died in 1862 and is buried in Richmond, Virginia.
