Biography: Life of John F. Kennedy
Born 1917, Died 1963; Served as 35th President of the United States 1961-1963.
John F. Kennedy was born on May 29, 1917 in Brookline, Massachusetts. Kennedy graduated from Harvard University and did graduate work at Stanford University.
Kennedy served with the Navy during World War II, commanding a torpedo boat in the South Pacific. He was cited for heroism after this boat, PT 109, was cut in half by a Japanese destroyer. Kennedy and his crew swam for five hours to reach an island, Kennedy gripping the straps of the life jacket of an injured member of the crew between his teeth.
John F. Kennedy was first elected to the United States House of Representatives in 1946 and re-elected again in 1948 and 1950. In 1952 JFK was elected to the Senate.
In 1953 John F. Kennedy married Jacqueline Lee Bouvier. They had four children, one stillborn and another died shortly after birth.
John F. Kennedy became president in 1961. With Cold War tensions mounting between Western and Communist countries, Kennedy promised to use strong means to stop the spread of communism. He created the Peace Corps and asked for additional funding for space research. In 1961, with the aid of the United States Central Intelligence Agency, Cuba was invaded by opponents of Fidel Castro. The invasion of the Bay of Pigs failed.
In 1962 aerial photographs showed Russian missile bases being built in Cuba. Seeing this as a threat to United States security, President Kennedy warned Nikita S. Khrushchev that an attack by Cuba anywhere in the Americas would be regarded as an attack by the Soviet Union. A quarantine was imposed on ships taking weapons to Cuba. The Cuban Missile Crisis was settled through negotiations with Khrushchev and the missiles were returned to the Soviet Union.
While on a political visit to Texas on November 22, 1963, John F. Kennedy was assasinated by Lee Harvey Oswald, a former US Marine and purportedly a Marxist and supporter of Castro. President Kennedy was rushed to the hospital where he died without regaining consciousness. He is buried in Arlington National Cemetery.
