John Adams was born in Braintree, Massachusetts on October 19, 1735. He attended Harvard College and became a teacher. While he taught, Adams also studied law and became a lawyer.

Adams married Abigail Smith with whom he had four children, including John Quincy Adams, the future president.

John Adams became a delegate to the First Continental Congress in 1774. In 1775 at the Second Continental Congress he nominated George Washington for commander of the Continental Army.

At the close of the Revolutionary War, John Adams was appointed minister to the Court of St. James’s in London, England.

John Adams became a leader of the Federalist Party and was elected second president of the United States, assuming office in 1797. He served only one term, which was fraught with both international and domestic turmoil, including the XYZ Affair and the Alien and Sedition Act. In the election of 1800 he lost to Thomas Jefferson and spent the remainder of his life in retirement.

In later life, John Adams often corresponded with Thomas Jefferson. They died on the same day, July 4, 1826, the fiftieth anniversary of the Declaration of Independence.
