Biography: Life of James K. Polk
Born 1795, Died 1849; Served as 11th President of the United States 1845-1849
James Knox Polk was born on November 2, 1795 in Mecklenburg County, North Carolina. Polk was educated at the University of North Carolina and later studied law.
In 1824 James Knox Polk married Sarah Childress. They had no children.
An able orator, in 1825 Polk was elected to the House of Representatives, where he served fourteen years. In 1839 he was elected governor of Tennessee.
In 1844 due to a dispute over a candidate for president, the Democratic Convention chose James Knox Polk as a compromise candidate. He was elected president and assumed office in 1845.
During his presidency, Polk obtained a lower tariff which brought greater trade from abroad and established the national Treasury. His desire to obtain California resulted in the Mexican War.
In 1849 John Knox Polk retired to Nashville, Tennessee where he died on June 15, 1849.
