James Buchanan Biography

Biography: Life of James Buchanan

Born 1791, Died 1868; Served as President of the United States 1857-1861.

James Buchanan was born on April 23, 1791 near Mercersburg, Pennsylvania. He attended Dickinson College and later became a lawyer.

Buchanan never married and is the country’s only bachelor president.

James Buchanan had a varied political career, serving in the Pennsylvania House of Representatives, the United States House of Representatives, minister to Russia, United States Senate and secretary of state under John Knox Polk.

James Buchanan was elected president in 1856 and assumed office in 1857. The nation was divided over the question of slavery, and the Supreme Court’s Dred Scott Decision enraged the North. Buchanan could not find a way to deal with the slavery issue. He was not selected as the Democratic nominee in the election of 1860. In the winter of 1860-61, with the election of Abraham Lincoln who opposed the extension of slavery, several Southern states seceded from the Union and formed the Confederate States of America.

In 1861 James Buchanan retired to his estate near Lancaster, Pennsylvania. He died on June 1, 1868.
