Herbert Hoover was born on August 10, 1874 in West Branch, Iowa. Hoover attended Leland Stanford Jr. University (Stanford University) and studied mining engineering.
In 1899 Herbert Hoover married Lou Henry. They had two sons. Hoover and his family traveled the world while he worked out mining engineering problems. He eventually opened his own firm.
During World War I Herbert Hoover performed many acts of public service. When the United States entered the war Hoover was appointed food administrator. In 1921 he was appointed Secretary of Commerce, serving until 1928.
Herbert Hoover became president in 1929. In October 1929 the stock market crashed setting off a panic and causing an economic breakdown. The crash was the beginning of the worldwide Great Depression. Hoover tried various means to attack the depression, including expanding credit, the creation of public works projects, a moratorium on payment of debts with European countries and the Emergency Relief Act of 1932.
With the depression deepening, Herbert Hoover lost his bid for re-election. In 1933 Hoover retired to Palo Alto, California. Herbert Hoover remained active in politics and died on October 20, 1964. He is buried in West Branch, Iowa.
