Harry S. Truman Biography


Biography: Life of Harry Truman

Born 1884, Died 1972 Served as President of the United States 1945-1953.


Harry S. Truman was born on May 8, 1884 in Lamar, Missouri. The family later moved to Independence where he attended school.

During his early years , Truman worked as a clerk, as a farmer and eventually owned a haberdashery. Truman served in World War I.

In 1919 Harry S. Truman married Elizabeth (Bess) Truman. They had one daughter.

Harry S. Truman began his political career in 1922 in Jackson County, Missouri, serving as overseer of highways, as a judge, and later as United States Senator from Missouri.

Harry S. Truman was elected as Franklin Roosevelt’s vice president in 1944. Truman became president upon the death of Roosevelt in 1945. Shortly after becoming president Truman made the decision to drop atomic bombs on Japan to end the war. Within a few days, Japan sued for peace. The war in Europe ended shortly thereafter. In 1945 the United States also joined the United Nations. The Marshall Plan to aid in the rebuilding of Europe was passed in 1948.

In an upset victory, Harry S. Truman was elected president in 1948. In 1950 war broke out in Korea and Truman ordered the use of United States military troops to aid the United Nations. An attempt was made to assassinate Truman in 1950 by two Puerto Rican terrorists.

Truman refused to seek re-election in 1953 and retired to Independence, Missouri. Harry S. Truman died on December 26, 1972. He is buried in Independence.
