Grover Cleveland Biography


Biography: Life of Grover Cleveland

Born 1837 Died 1908; Served as President of the United States 1885-1889 and 1893-1897.


Grover Cleveland was born on March 18, 1837 at Caldwell, New Jersey. The family later moved to New York State. Not an exceptional student, Cleveland later studied law.

Cleveland practiced law in Buffalo and became active in the Democratic Party. He serves as mayor of Buffalo and in 1883 became governor of New York. Grover Cleveland was elected president in 1884 and became president in 1885.

A bachelor when assuming the presidency, in 1886 Grover Cleveland married Frances Folsom. They had five children.

At the time, the country was so prosperous that the unions went on strike for an eight-hour day and the American Federation of Labor was formed. During Garfield’s term in office, the Interstate Commerce Act became law.

Although nominated for a second term, Grover Cleveland lost the 1888 election to Benjamin Harrison.

In 1892 Grover Cleveland was again nominated by the Democrats and defeated Harrison. He became president for the second time in 1893, the only president to be elected after having been defeated.

During Cleveland’s second administration the country went through the Panic of 1893 which was caused by a lack of gold in the treasury. The country was also plagued by numerous strikes.

In 1897 Cleveland retired to Princeton, New Jersey. Grover Cleveland died on June 24, 1908.
