Biography: Life of Dwight D. "Ike" Eisenhower
Born 1890, Died 1969 Served as President of the United States 1953-1961.
Dwight D. Eisenhower was born on October 14, 1890 in Denison, Texas. Eisenhower graduated from the United States Military Academy at West. Point.
On July 1, 1916 Eisenhower married Mary (Mamie) Doud. They had one son.
During World War I Dwight D. Eisenhower organized a tank corps and was awarded the Distinguished Service Medal for this service. The war ended just before he was to go to France. In following years Eisenhower was assigned to posts in the United States, the Panama Canal Zone and Europe. In 1928 he graduated from the Army War College.
In 1933 Dwight D. Eisenhower became an aide to General Douglas MacArthur. In 1935 he accompanied MacArthur to the Philippines to help in the reorganization of their army in preparation for their independence.
Dwight D. Eisenhower returned to the United States in 1940. World War II brought Eisenhower several quick promotions. He served for a time on the war plans division of the Army General Staff. While Eisenhower knew military strategy, his greatest talent was his ability to bring officers of different countries together into one team.
In 1942 General George C. Marshall appointed Dwight D. Eisenhower Commanding General of the United States Forces in Europe. Eisenhower took over the command and planned for the invasion of North Africa. In 1943 Eisenhower was promoted to four-star general. He then launched successful assaults on Sicily and Italy.
In December 1943 Dwight Eisenhower was appointed Supreme Commander, Allied Expeditionary Forces for the invasion of Europe. On June 6, 1944 the Allied forces landed on the beaches of Normandy, France. Within ten months the Allies had driven across Europe into Germany. The war in Europe came to an end with the German surrender on May 8, 1945. Prior to the surrender, on December 20, 1944 Dwight D. Eisenhower had been promoted to five-star general.
Dwight D. Eisenhower was elected to the presidency in a landslide in 1952 and became president in 1953. An armistice signed in 1953 ended the Korean War. Eisenhower tried to reduce the number of government agencies and by reorganization obtain more efficiency and less cost. During his first term, the Supreme Court ruled that racial segregation in public schools was unconstitutional.
Despite having suffered a heart attack, he was re-elected and began his second term in 1957. During Eisenhower’s second administration, Congress passed his civil rights bill. To enforce the bill, he sent federal troops into Little Rock, Arkansas to enable nine black children admission to high school. The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) was formed during Eisenhower’s second term.
In foreign policy, Eisenhower was committed to world peace. In 1959 he hosted a meeting with Soviet Premier, Nikita S. Khrushchev. Despite his diplomacy, Cold War tensions increased.
Dwight D. Eisenhower retired in 1961 to his farm at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. He died on March 28, 1969 and is buried in Abilene, Kansas.
