Chester Alan Arthur Biography


Biography: Life of Chester Alan Arthur

Born 1830, Died 1886; Served as President of the United States 1881-1885.


Chester Alan Arthur was born in Fairfield, Vermont on October 5, 1830. Arthur attended Union College in Schenectady, New York and taught school while studying law.

In 1859 Chester Alan Arthur married Ellen Lewis Herndon. They had three children.

Active in the Republic Party in New York, in 1871 Arthur was appointed to the position of collector of the Port of New York.

In 1880 Chester Alan Arthur was elected to be James A. Garfield’s vice president. When Garfield died on September 19, 1881, Chester Alan Arthur became president. Favoring civil service reform, he signed the Pendleton Act in 1883. During his administration the Navy was modernized and the first immigration law was enacted.

Chester Alan Arthur was not nominated for re-election and in 1885 retired to New York. Arthur died on November 18, 1886.
