Andrew Johnson Biography


Biography: Life of Andrew Johnson

Born 1808, Died 1875; Served as President of the United States 1865-1869.


Andrew Johnson was born on December 29, 1808 in Raleigh, North Carolina. Johnson had little formal education and learned to be a tailor. The family later moved to Tennessee.

In 1827 Andrew Johnson married Eliza McCardle, who helped to educate him. They had five children.

Andrew Johnson served in several elected offices in Tennessee. He also served in the United States House of Representatives, governor of Tennessee, and in 1857 Andrew Johnson became a United States senator.

Andrew Johnson was elected vice president for Lincoln’s second term. Andrew Johnson assumed the presidency in 1865 when Lincoln died.

The period of reconstruction after the Civil War was a period of bitter dispute between Andrew Johnson and the Congress. In 1868 the Congress, because of political differences with Johnson, voted to impeach him.

Andrew Johnson left office in 1869 and later was elected to the United States Senate. Johnson died on July 31, 1875 and is buried in Greeneville, Tennessee.
