Andrew Jackson Biography

Biography: Life of Andrew Jackson

Born 1767, Died 1845; Served as 7th President of the United States 1829-1837.

Andrew Jackson was born on March 15, 1767 in South Carolina, near the border with North Carolina. Growing up on the frontier, he had little formal education as a youth. He later studied law and in 1788 went to Nashville, Tennessee to practice.

In 1791 Andy Jackson married Rachel Donelson Robards. They had no children of their own, but adopted a nephew of his wife. After suffering heavy financial loss, Jackson moved this family to a smaller property, the Hermitage.

When Tennessee was admitted as a state in 1796, Andrew Jackson was elected to the House of Representatives and in 1797 was elected senator.

Andrew Jackson gained his reputation as a soldier for his victorious service in the War of 1812 with the Tennessee militia. Jackson was commissioned a major general in the regular army and was responsible for the defeat of the British at the Battle of New Orleans.

As a man of the common people, Andrew Jackson won the election of 1828 over John Quincy Adams, assuming office in 1829. President Jackson was re-elected to a second term in 1832. During his administrations, President Jackson vetoed a new charter for the Bank of the United States and enlarged the powers of the presidency.

When Andrew Jackson left office in 1837 he retired to the Hermitage. Jackson died on January 8, 1845.
