Biography: Life of Abraham Lincoln

Born 1809, Died 1865; Served as 16th President of the United States 1861-1865.


Abraham Lincoln was born on February 12, 1809 near Hodenville, Kentucky. Lincoln had little formal education, but was an avid reader. The family eventually moved to Illinois where Lincoln worked as a farmer, store clerk, postmaster and surveyor.

In 1834 Abraham Lincoln was elected to the Illinois General Assembly, serving four terms. During this time he studied law and moved to Springfield, Illinois.

Abe Lincoln married Mary Todd in 1842. They had four sons.

Lincoln was elected to the United States House of Representatives in 1847. When his term expired he returned to Springfield to continue his law practice.

With the threatened expansion of slavery, Lincoln returned to politics. In 1858 he ran for Senator from Illinois against Stephen A. Douglas. Although Abe Lincoln lost this election, he gained fame from the Lincoln-Douglas Debates on the issue of slavery.

In 1860 Abraham Lincoln became the first Republican to be elected president. Between the time of his election and inauguration in 1861, the South seceded from the Union. On April 12, 1861 the Civil War began.

Determined to save the Union, President Lincoln was a strong and determined president and commander-in-chief. On September 22, 1862, Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation. In 1863 President Lincoln gave his famous speech, the Gettysburg Address, at the dedication of the cemetery.

Elected to a second term, the end of the Civil War was near at the time of his inaugural in 1865. General Lee surrendered to General Grant on April 9, 1965. While attending a play at Ford’s Theater, Abraham Lincoln was assassinated by John Wilkes Booth. Lincoln died the next day, April 16, 1965. He is buried in Springfield, Illinois.
