Joan of Arc Biography

Biography: Life of Joan of Arc

Born 1412, Died 1431.

Joan of Arc, the Maid of Orléans, was born on January 6, 1412 in Domremy, France during the time of the Hundred Years’ War in Europe.

The north of France was occupied by the English, including the city of Reims where the coronation ceremonies for Charles VII, the Dauphin, were to be held.

From the age of 13, Joan of Arc had visions from Saint Michael. Her friends who believed her to be inspired aided her in traveling to the Dauphin. Joan finally convinced him to send his armies to take back Reims so that the coronation could be held. Carrying a banner, Joan of Arc rode with the armies and inspired them to victory. Joan of Arc stood at the side of Charles VII when he was crowned.

Joan of Arc continued to ride with the French armies and was captured by the troops of the Duke of Burgundy, an ally of the English. Joan was sold to the English, who intended to execute her. The English turned her over to the ecclesiastical court of the University of Paris which charged her with heresy and witchcraft. Joan of Arc was condemned to be burned if she did not recant. Facing death, she submitted and was sentenced to life imprisonment. The English were outraged and accused Joan of Arc of relapsing. On May 30, 1431 Joan of Arc was turned over to civil authorities and was burned at the stake.

The Roman Catholic Church canonized Joan of Arc a saint in 1920.
