Paul von Hindenburg Biography

Biography: Life of Paul von Hindenburg

Born 1847, Died 1934

Paul von Hindenburg was born of a noble Prussian family on October 2, 1847 at Posen, Germany.

Hindenburg was schooled to be a soldier and was decorated in the war against Austria in 1866 and the Franco-Prussian War of 1870-1871. He rose in rank and became a lieutenant general in 1900. Hindenburg retired from the military in 1911.

Paul von Hindenburg’s service to Germany was not over. Shortly after the start of World War I, the German army asked the 67 year old Hindenburg to assume command of the army against the Russians on the eastern front. The Russians were quickly defeated at the Battles of Tannenberg and Masurian Lakes.

In 1916 Paul von Hindenburg was made chief commander of the German armies. His defense of the Hindenburg Line on the western front in 1917 stopped the drive of the Allied forces. Germany was eventually defeated and surrendered in 1918. Hindenburg retired from the military for the second time in 1919.

Paul von Hindenburg was elected president of the German Republic in 1925 and reconciled Germany with its earlier enemies. He was re-elected president in 1932 by defeating Adolf Hitler. When economic conditions worsened in Germany, Hindenburg named Adolf Hitler chancellor of Germany. Hitler assumed control of Germany. Paul von Hindenburg died on August 2, 1934.
