Biography: Life of Otto von Bismarck

Otto von Bismarck who was born on April 1, 1815 came from a landholding class, the Junkers. Bismarck studied law and after compulsory military service managed the family estates.
At the time of his birth, Germany was a loose connection of states. In 1847 Otto von Bismarck entered politics with the intention of freeing the German states from the control of Austria and uniting them under the control of Prussia.
Bismarck, who defended the right of kings to rule, was appointed representative to the German Confederation by the Hohenzollern king of Prussia. He also served as ambassador to Russia and France.
In 1862 Otto von Bismarck was appointed minister-president of Prussia by King William I. He dismissed the Prussian parliament, which had refused the plans of the king to enlarge the army.
In wars with Denmark and Austria in 1866 and 1867, Bismarck gained control of the northern states and formed them into the North German Confederation.
Relations between Prussia and France, a long-time enemy, came to a head in 1870 over the nomination of a Hohenzollern prince to the throne of Spain. France declared war on Prussia, but was defeated by the stronger armies of Prussia and the other German states. A new German empire emerged with William I as Kaiser. Otto von Bismarck was appointed chancellor. During his term as chancellor, Bismarck shaped the policies of Germany and Europe.
In 1890 Otto von Bismarck was dismissed by Kaiser William II, the grandson of William I. Bismarck retired to his estate and died on July 30, 1898.
