Adolf Hitler Biography

Biography: Life of Adolf Hitler

Born 1889, Died 1945

Adolf Hitler was born on April 20, 1889 at Braunau-am-Inn, Austria, being of German descent.

From the time he was a boy, the strong-willed Hitler had an interest in German history and Wagner’s operas. His future political doctrines were based on his interest in his German background and his hatred for Jews.

Having contempt for Austria, when World War I began in 1914 Adolf Hitler gave up his citizenship and enlisted in a Bavarian infantry unit. In Munich following the war he joined the German Workers’ Party, a group of men who shared his political views. These men later became some of his closest advisors. In 1920 Hitler changed the name of the group to Nationalsozialistische Deutsche Arbeiterpartei (National Socialist German Workers’ party), which was abbreviated to Nazi. Adolf Hitler, the orator of the party, spouted against the Jews and called for a national German state.

In 1923 Hitler was sentenced to prison for his part in a failed attempt to take over the government in Munich. While in prison Hitler began to write his biography ‘Mein Kampf’ (My Struggle). For a time after his release he was not allowed to speak publicly.

The Nazi party began to gain support from the military and industrialists when Germany suffered from a world-wide depression. In 1933 President Paul von Hindenburg appointed Adolf Hitler chancellor of Germany. Hitler and the Nazis brutally assumed control of the government establishing Germany's "Third Reich". Only the Nazi party was allowed, taking control of all aspects of German life. When Hindenburg died, Hitler abolished the presidency and assumed the title Führer.

Germany withdrew from the League of Nations and denounced the World War I Versailles Treaty. Hitler began forming alliances and building up the army. He annexed Austria and parts of other eastern European countries. In 1939 Adolf Hitler invaded Poland, beginning World War II. The German armies then pushed westward, successfully taking many countries. Many millions of people were killed in forced labor camps and in extermination camps.

The turning point of World War II came when Hitler invaded Russia and was defeated at Stalingrad. Germany became the center of the battle as the Allies victoriously pushed forward from east and west.

Adolf Hitler committed suicide in April 1945 just before the final defeat of Germany.
