Louis XIV, the Grand Monarch, was born in 1638 and ruled as King of France from 1643 to 1715. Louis XIV wanted to gain more European territory for France, but neglected expansion of French power in America. He engaged in several wars in his attempts to gain European territory. These wars were costly, both financially and in terms of lost lives.
Louis XIV also spent immense amounts in building the magnificent palace at Versailles and maintaining his court there. He was known as the Sun King.
The French people were heavily taxed to pay for the wars of Louis XIV and his excessive life style. These excesses laid the ground for the French Revolution.
Louis XIV died in 1715. He ruled for 72 years, longer than any other European monarch.
