Biography: Life of Winston Churchill

Winston Leonard Spencer Churchill was born on November 30, 1874 at Blenheim Palace, on the estate of the dukes of Marlborough. He attended Harrow and Sandhurst military college. Following graduation he joined the British army.
Winston Churchill was an avid reader with a gift for writing. He wrote numerous books throughout his life. He was a war correspondent during the Boer War in South Africa. He was captured and imprisoned, but managed to escape and return to the British lines.
In 1900 Winston Churchill was elected to Parliament. Though controversial, he was a hard worker who got things done and served in numerous offices. Prior to World War I Churchill was appointed to prepare the Navy for war.
Between World War I and World War II, Winston Churchill held a number of offices and continued his writings.
Soon after Hitler came to power, Churchill recognized his threat and tried to warn the British. In 1940, Churchill became prime minister of England. Winston Churchill was a courageous leader and strategist throughout the war years.
In 1953 Winston Churchill was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II and received the Nobel Prize for literature. In 1963 he was made an honorary citizen of the United States.
Winston Churchill died on January 24, 1965 and is buried at Bladon near his birthplace at Blenheim Palace.
