Alexandrina Victoria was born in London in 1819. Of the German House of Hanover, her parents left Germany for England so that the possible heir would be born in England.
Victoria became queen in 1837 when she was eighteen years old. Lord Melbourne, who was the first prime minister of Queen Victoria, began her political education. During her reign, she acquired wisdom and enormous influence over the government.
In 1840 Queen Victoria married her cousin, Prince Albert. They were a devoted couple and had nine children. When Albert died in 1861, Queen Victoria avoided London and went into seclusion.
Later in her reign, Benjamin Disraeli, Earl of Beaconsfield, became Queen Victoria’s prime minister. In 1876, Disraeli had Victoria proclaimed Empress of India. During her reign Queen Victoria had able ministers and England had a long period of peace and prosperity.
Queen Victoria died in 1901, having reigned for 64 years.
