Biography: Life of King George III of England and Ireland
Born 1738, Died 1820; Reigned from 1760-1820.
King George III, of the German House of Hanover, was born in England in 1738. He was king of England from 1760 until 1820. Queen Victoria was the only sovereign to reign longer than George the Third.
George the Third did not have great ability, but was very obstinate. His attempts to restore England to its former power suffered because of his obstinacy. King George III reigned during the time of the American Revolution. When the American colonists defeated the British at the Battle of Yorktown in 1781, the Whigs took control of the British government.
King George III suffered periodic episodes of insanity and when he died was both insane and blind.
