Biography: Life of Mao Tse-tung
Born 1893, Died 1976
Mao Tse-tung (Mao Zedong) was born on December 26, 1893 in Hunan Province. He was born into a peasant family during a time of corruption and oppression in China.
After graduating from a normal school, Mao went to Peking where he worked as an assistant librarian at Peking University. It was here that Mao began his study of Marxism. He returned to Hunan and became one of the founding members of the Chinese Communist Party. Mao believed in a peasant revolution and established an army.
In 1931 Mao Tse-tung was elected chairman of the Soviet Republic of China in Kiangsi Province. Chiang Kai-shek, leader of the Nationalist government, led a campaign to eliminate the Chinese Communist Party. Though civil war continued between them, the two groups united against the Japanese during World War II.
Mao-Tse-tung rose in power within the Chinese Communist Party. The Nationalist government collapsed in 1949 and Chiang Kai-shek fled to Taiwan. Mao Tse-tung became chairman of the newly formed People’s Republic of China.
In 1958, in an effort to modernize China, Mao launched his Great Leap Forward program for economic and technical development of the country. The program was a disastrous failure, resulting in the starvation of twenty million people.
Mao withdrew for a time and was replaced as chairman of the government. During the Cultural Revolution of 1966 to 1976 Mao Tse-tung reestablished his power. Mao died on September 9, 1976.
