Confucius Biography

Biography: Life of Confucius

Born 551 B.C., Died 478 B.C.

Confucius, the Chinese philosopher, was born about the year 551 B.C. in what is now Shantung province.

Born of a poor but noble family, Confucius worked for a time for the governor of his district. When Confucius was 22 he established a school. He accepted any student who had the ability and the will to learn. Through his wise sayings, Confucius spent his life teaching a correct way of living and respect for the teachers who had gone before him. He taught goodness and tried to help men live better lives. His rule of conduct says, “What ye would not that others should do unto you, do ye not unto them”.

The greatly respected Confucius, at the age of 52, was appointed governor of a province. When the governor of another province became jealous of the job he was doing, Confucius went into voluntary exile. The discouraged Confucius ended his wanderings when he was 69 and returned to his home. He died three years later.

Confucius, never claiming to be more than a man, was so greatly revered that when he died temples were erected all over China in his honor. Confucianism, though often referred to as a religion, is instead a way of ethically living a good life.
